A Tour for Grandma
My grandmother had never seen a jet airplane or even been to the airport. I was a “stewardess” for United Airlines in the early 60s and flew into Salt Lake often. For Grandmother’s 80th birthday, Mom and Dad brought her down from Brigham City. I had flown in to the Salt Lake airport on a DC-7 jet aircraft. I met Grandma, gave her her first orchard corsage, walked her outside the waiting room, across the tarmac because there was no such thing as a breezeway and up the stairs into the first class entrance of her first jet airplane or even plane. We walked through the plane as I pointed out the galley, cockpit and other amenities on this modern form of transport. We exited the rear, again down the stairs, over the tarmac and into the airport. She said that was an exciting experience and eventually became the only time Grandma was ever in an airplane or even the airport. She thought is was an amazing building and was thrilled to see the big map on the floor. She couldn’t believe people could build such things as airplanes or even the fancy building.
