As of Oct. 10, 2022, the public procurement process seeking concessions for The New SLC-Phase 3 has begun. The review established facility requirements, determined physical and economic feasibility, and defined a conceptual layout plan along with estimated construction costs. To mark the second anniversary of The New SLC Airport opening, officials are planning a Worker Appreciation Event to thank those who have transformed the vision for the new airport into reality. Today, the Salt Lake City Department of Airports (SLCDA) celebrates one year since opening The New SLC-Phase 1—with the distinction of being the first new U.S. hub airport built in the 21st Century—while announcing LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. One year ago on Sept. 15, 2020, the Salt Lake City Department of Airports opened the first phase of The New SLC, which included a new parking garage, terminal and Concourse A-west. Six weeks later on Oct. 27, the remainder of Phase 1 was unveiled with the opening of Concourse B-west. The SLCDA Executive Director Bill Wyatt will join Mayor Erin Mendenhall on Sept. 15, 2021, to mark the first 365 days and announce a national sustainability award. Demolition of the former airport facilities continues to move forward on schedule to make way for building Phase II of The New SLC Redevelopment Program. A major milestone in the demolition will occur on Feb. 15 when what is known as the “Delta Tower” comes down. With the first phase of The New SLC now open, crews have started dismantling and demolishing the former airport facilities in preparation for the build out of Phase II. Tuesday’s tour will provide an opportunity for media to learn more about how the airport is moving forward with the demolition and to get video and take photos. Shortly after midnight the second act opened at The New SLC with the debut of Concourse B. As of midnight, aircraft were no longer loading and unloading passengers in the former airport concourses C, F and G. All airlines serving SLC are now operating out of entirely new facilities. Six weeks after opening the bulk of the first phase of The New SLC, the Salt Lake City Department of Airports is getting ready to open part two of the first phase—Concourse B. The morning of Tuesday, October 27, a Grand Opening Celebration for Concourse B is planned at Gate B17. Today at 4:00 a.m., the Salt Lake City Department of Airports (SLCDA) turned the key and opened the first phase of The New SLC Airport. As the lights dimmed on the existing airport, the lights brightened on a new parking garage, gateway center, central terminal and Concourse A-west. Delta Air Lines will occupy the 25 gates in Concourse A-west, including six international gates. In six weeks—on Oct. 27—Concourse B-west will open with 20 gates for Alaska, American, Frontier, JetBlue, Southwest and United airlines. The first phase of The New SLC Airport will open to passengers with activities planned to celebrate the first departing and arriving flights. The New SLC is the first new hub airport built in the 21st Century. At 4 a.m. on Sept. 15, the Salt Lake City Department of Airports will open a new parking garage, terminal and the west portion of Concourse A. The Salt Lake City Department of Airports (SLCDA) will be turning out the lights on sections of the original airport the morning of Sept. 15 as the first phase of The New SLC opens its doors. The Salt Lake City Department of Airports has an opportunity for artists to design murals for the Mid-Concourse Tunnel, which is part of The New SLC Redevelopment Program. When The New SLC Airport opens the north concourse on October 27, 2020—six weeks after the south concourse opens—a tunnel will transport passengers between Concourse A and Concourse B. The tunnel will be used by passengers for approximately three years while the permanent tunnel is built as part of second phase of construction. When The New SLC Airport opens in September 2020, it will be unforgettable for a number of reasons. There will be less congestion—both curbside and at the gates—there will be plenty of places to plug-in, plus noteworthy shops and restaurants. But perhaps what will remain with passengers long after their flights have departed are the art installations planned for the new facility. The countdown to opening day—September 15, 2020—is on! There is less than one year until Salt Lake City Department of Airports opens the first phase of The New SLC. Reporters will see how far we’ve come in the past year and what is left in to do in the coming year.
