Salt Lake International Airport

Special Guest Departure

In 1983, I was in college and I was on a committee that brought in speakers to Utah State University. One of the speakers we paid to come and speak to us was the civil rights leader Dr. Ralph Abernathy. I was asked to pick him up at the airport and take him back. I was the driver and three or four students came with me on the return.

When we got to the airport gate, Dr. Abernathy said, “Let us pray,” so we all held hands and he let out a very Southern Baptist prayer right in the middle of the B gates. It was quite surprising for everyone there. He said, “Amen” and got on the plane.
