The Salt Lake City International Airport celebrated the completion of The New SLC Redevelopment Program over two days with a ribbon cutting, the premiere of an airport theme and other activities that brought together current and former employees who had a hand in building the $5.1 billion airport. Salt Lake City Department of Airports has achieved something not done this century: constructed the first new hub airport in the United States. To celebrate this milestone, SLCDA commissioned Utah composer Kurt Bestor to write an airport theme to celebrate flight. With the wave of a composer’s baton, the Salt Lake City International Airport celebrated the end The New SLC Redevelopment Program—a 12-year construction project—on Saturday night. The theme for the celebration was “Gateway to the World,” highlighting the airport’s transformation to a global facility. Salt Lake City Department of Airports marked the completion of The New SLC on Oct. 23 by unveiling “Crossroads to the World,” a suspended installation of about 2,500 colorful, laser-cut acrylic airplanes—the final art piece in the airport’s 12-year rebuild. Construction workers finishing up The New SLC Redevelopment Program’s final phase are planning a Remembrance Event to honor and recognize first responders and those who lost their lives on 9-11.
